"What Is Security - Where Do You Start?"
By Ralph Moore (c)2004

Type "Security" into any search engine and you will get
more "hits" than you could review in ten lifetimes.

Security is a HUGE subject!

And it is GROWING and CONSTANTLY CHANGING too.

It consists of:

Auditing, Authorization, Contingency Planning, Data
Integrity, Documentation, Hardware And System Software
Maintenance, Identification and Authentication...

Incident Response Capabilities, Life Cycles, Access
Controls, Network Security, Personnel Security, Physical
and Environment Protection, Input and Output Controls...

Program Management, Policies And Procedures, Security
Controls Review, Mission Site Vulnerability Assessment,
Risk Management, Security Awareness, Training and Education,
System Security Plans and more.

With a subject that is so expansive, it can be overwhelming
to consider where you should start to apply "best security
practices" to you own small business.

Remember the song from the musical "The Sound of Music"?
"Let's start at the very beginning, It's a very good place
to start..."

If you remember, the "governess" (Maria) while trying to
teach the children to sing, pointed out that they needed to
learn the notes of the musical scale before learning to sing
a song.

With security as it applies to a small business, it's a
little bit different.

The problem with trying to apply a "one size fits all" plan
to secure a small business, is that each business has a
different budget and a different set of needs based upon
their business goals.

And quite often, the business will have a unique ability
to implement and manage a security plan on their own, based
on their internal ability to work with technology.

It turns out that "the very best place to start" to secure
your own small business is with a review of you current
security practices as well as current and future security
needs.

While all small businesses will share a need for some of the
items listed above, not every business could (or should)
plan on spending the same amount of time and expense to
protect their assets.

The "one man" (or woman) business operating out of their
home office will have a much different set of needs than
the 10 person, rapidly growing "shop around the corner".

As your budget allows, you should plan on a first-time
security audit as well as a periodic review, to make sure
that you are keeping up with the security needs of your
business and the changing security "landscape".

As we move ahead into this "new millenium", every small
business needs to plan for success by establishing and
maintaining a well thought out security plan, as a vital
piece of their "business puzzle".

While one missing piece might make a jigsaw puzzle a little
less than "spectacular", overlooking your small business
security could be a disaster waiting to happen to you.

And that's not "a very good place to start"!

5) ======= Light Flight =======
[The Lighter Side Of Life - Jokes & Humor]

One day a cop stops a driver for running a stop sign.

As he begins to write the ticket, the driver says "I don't
think I deserve that ticket. I slowed down and almost came
to a complete stop".

The cop says "Step out of the car please".

After the man gets out of the car, the cop pulls out his
night stick and says "If I start hitting you with this
stick, are you going to tell me to slow down or to stop?"
