[Observations on business and life]
"A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe
in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the
dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing
to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price
for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done."
--Vince Lombardi
"If you'll not settle for anything less than your best,
you will be amazed at what you can accomplish in your
lives. --Vince Lombardi
In preparation for the coming year, let us resolve to give
it our best shot, focus on our goals and strive for the
absolute best in each of our chosen endeavors.

Windows XP - Change "Away" Status Time
"Away" status appears when your p.c. has been inactive for
the period of time that your screen saver wait time is set
for. To manually specify "Away" as a status, click File /
My Status / Away.
To change the length of time before your status is "Away"
change the screen saver Wait setting in the Windows Display
Properties box or if you want to specify a time other than
the screen saver Wait time, change the inactivity time in
the "Windows Messenger" Options dialog box.
To change the Windows screen saver Wait setting:
1. Right-click the Windows desktop, then click Properties.
2. Click the Screen Saver tab, and then type the number of
minutes in the Wait box (with Screen Saver selected).
3. Click Apply.
The screen saver Wait time automatically appears in the
Windows Messenger Options dialog box as the default "Away"
status wait time.
To make the "Away" time differ from your screen saver time:
1. In Windows Messenger, on the Tools menu, click Options.
2. Click the Preferences tab.
3. In the "Show me as "Away" when I'm inactive for box",
type the number of minutes to override the screen saver
setting.

"Small Business Security - It's a Dynamic Process"
By Ralph Moore (c)2004
In the very first article in this series about "Practical
Security for Small Business", I touched on the basics of
needing to protect your physical assets, as well as the
important information that is essential to your business.
In any discussion of computer security, it's important to
understand that what worked last week (or even yesterday)
may not work today to protect your business.
Did you run a backup last week? Excellent!
Now, have you added any new or updated information such as
letters, customer invoices, notes, records of conversations,
entries in your calendar or more? Have you backed up since
then?
Have you installed any new computer programs? If so, have
you updated with the necessary patches to maintain control
over your computer and your network?
Have you hired any new employees, or have any employees who
had access to your company data left the company under less
than ideal circumstances?
And by the way, how do you get along with the people (your
employees) who are responsible for much of your success?
The popular comedy movie "Office Space" offers some humorous
insight into the "mental gymnastics" that may be lurking
within your own organization. Treat "your people" well!
Employees who can't wait to get to work each day, because of
the way that they are treated, and because of their wonderful
work environment, are some of the greatest assets to any
business.
On the other hand, employees who feel slighted, overworked
or under appreciated are one of the gravest dangers to the
security of a business.
What about your hardware? A new computer, a router, a switch
or even a portable device like one of the currently popular
"jump" or "flash" drives can bring with it additional
security vulnerabilities.
If your business is like most, things are subject to change
on a daily basis, and it should be at the top of your list
to review your security practices, and insure that you are
not left unprotected.
As computers increase in sophistication and reliability,
we have a tendency to take them for granted. It is easy to
assume that everything including the overall security of
our equipment and networks is continually improving.
It would be more accurate to recognize that everything is
always changing including the best security practices for
your business.
Establishing a certain level of security for your business
may be a one-time event but maintaining that security level
is a never-ending process.
If you are unsure of just how secure your business is or if
you don't know where to begin to "figure it out" consult a
qualified professional who can help you to get started.
Failing to plan ahead is certainly a plan to fail.
Plan ahead for the success of your business by making sure
to include a good working security plan that grows, changes
and keeps current with your business.

[Sites and services that we recommend]
"Background Check Gateway" Web Site
This is an interesting web site to say the least. I would
suggest reading through this site. It is a reminder of how
quickly information has become available for a variety of
purposes, all because of the Internet.
With this, as with any emerging Internet technology, I
recommend being very careful should you decide to use
this or any similar site as a business resource.
Because there may be hidden liabilities in working with
sites online, contact a qualified Internet attorney for
any information that you might need before you proceed.

[The Lighter Side Of Life - Jokes & Humor]
One day, a teacher, a garbage collector and a lawyer ended
up at the Pearly Gates.
St. Peter told them that they would each have to answer a
question in order to get into heaven.
First, he asked the teacher... "What was the name of the
famous ship that hit the iceberg?"
"The Titanic", the teacher replied. St. Peter let him in
the gate.
Next, St. Peter asked the garbage collector... "How many
people died on the Titanic?" An avid reader of history,
the garbage collector answered... "About 1,500."
"That's right! You may enter." said St. Peter.
Then St. Peter turned to the lawyer and said. "Name them."

[Real-life accounts of hardware, software and more]
Common Problems From "The Bench"
The longer I work in the Information Technology field, the
more I see the same problems cropping up over and over
again.
Here are a few of the most common problems that I see in
the businesses that I consult with:
1. Failure to have a working backup system that has been
tested and is known to be reliable.
2. Lost software. Most businesses actually do have the
software, but very often cannot locate it quickly which
results in lost time and additional service fees.
3. Inaccurate employee accounts on workstations. This is
often the result of new employees using accounts that
were originally set up for previous employees. Not only
will software often not work correctly, it opens up a
multitude of business security and liability issues.
4. Inability to access data quickly. Countless "manhours"
are lost due to this one error. Without a comprehensive
system for managing the growing amount of data that most
businesses depend upon, costs rise and efficiency plummets.
5. Failure to adequately protect computers and the other
hardware used daily. Power surge protectors and more often
than not UPS's (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) are not
"accessories" but are a necessary part of any computer or
business network.
6. Lack of communication. This ranges from within the
various levels of the company, from employees talking with
department heads to working with tech support.
I could go on for pages. The important thing is to try to
recognize when there is a problem and then work to find
a solution rather than a temporary "patch".
It's your business that will profit when you do!
