"A Business By Any Other Domain Name"
By Ralph Moore (c)2004

In the first article of this series, I mentioned that it's
important to think before you act when choosing a domain
name for your business.

You may not have had any say in your own name, but you do
get to decide the name of the link that people will click
to connect with your business online.

There are as many theories on picking a good domain name
as there are domain names, well almost anyway.

Someone once said "You can't always get what you want..."
but with a little creative thought, you can get something
that will work well for your business domain name.

Start by taking a sheet of paper (or just use "notepad" on
your computer) and write down any words or names that come
to mind when you think of your business.

Are you in the dog grooming business? Things that come to
my mind are: ataboy, rover fetch, hold still, want a treat,
stop scratching, a dogs life, and more.

Here are some rules of thumb:

1) If possible, keep it short. Ten to fifteen letters is
best if you can do it. A good example of a short domain
name is http://www.yahoo.com/

2) Make it memorable. The length is important, but if you
can make it easy to remember, that's more important still.
http://www.google.com/ is an example of an oddly memorable
name.

3) Use keywords in the name whenever possible. If it is
not already in use, try using the most important keyword
having to do with your business or products as part of
your domain name. The http://www.bootdisk.com/ and the
http://www.techies.com/ are both excellent examples of
using keywords in domain names.

4) Avoid unusual characters. People will not remember
that you use dashes between words in your domain name,
and since hyperlinks are always underlined, using the
"under score" character is sure to cause problems.

5) Use correct spelling. If there's a way to mis-spell it,
believe me, people will find it.

6) Bounce your ideas off of your friends and business
associates. The name that sounds great to you, might not
be the right one for your business.

7) Avoid using copyrighted or trademarked names. You don't
want the hassle of having to change domain names once you
have gone to the expense and time of registering your name
and creating your web site(s).

If you're "drawing a blank", try using one of the online
"domain name generator" services such as:

http://www.webmaster-toolkit.com/domain-name-generator.shtml

or

http://www.nameBoy.com/

A great domain name registrar service (and the one that I
both recommend and use) for helping to find an available
domain name and for suggesting variations on names that
you are considering can be found right here:

http://www.godaddy.com/

By taking the time to plan your domain name, so that it is
short and memorable, and leaves the visitor with a positive
image of your business, you can set the stage for greater
success online for years to come.
