[Observations on business and life]
I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run,
deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the
discipline. There is something good in men that really
yearns for discipline. --Vince Lombardi
He that has learned to obey will know how to command.
--Solon
The greatest freedoms in life first require learning to
be disciplined. Success in many of life's arenas depends
upon teamwork, and teamwork is built upon a foundation
of discipline.

[A variety of business helps and tips]
Speed up Menu Displays in Windows XP
Speed up the way menus display in Windows XP, with this
simple procedure:
Click "Start / Control Panel / Performance / Maintenance /
System".
Now click the "Advanced" tab, and under "Performance",
click the "Settings" button.
Clear the check box that says "Fade or slide menus into
view", and click OK to save the change.
Your menus should now expand more quickly without this
"visual enhancement".

"Pay Per Click for Small Business - Part 1"
By Ralph Moore
What is Pay Per Click Advertising?
"Pay Per Click Advertising" is a process that allows you
to quickly place your web page where it will be sure to
be seen, by people who are searching for whatever you are
offering.
This process is often referred to as "targeted" advertising
since it points people in the direction that you want them
to go, much like aiming at a target.
How does it work?
Pay per click advertising works through a "bidding" process.
Each advertiser bids a certain amount of money, sometimes
as little as $.01 or as much as several dollars, for a
"keyword" or "key phrase".
The ad with the highest bid is placed in the top position
on the search engines "results page", whenever a visitor
searches for that keyword or phrase.
The person with the next highest bid has their ad placed
in the second position, and so forth.
Whenever someone sees your ad and "clicks through", an
amount of money equal to your bid is deducted from your
account with the search engine company.
By bidding for a higher position in the results page, it
is likely that your ad will be seen and opened more often
than ads that appear farther down in the listings.
Why is pay per click advertising important?
Pay per click advertising can bring "targeted" traffic to
your web site at a very low "cost to visitor" ratio.
It has been reported that pay per click ads will increase
from over $1.2 Billion in 2002 to $7 or $8 Billion by 2008.
Why would I want to use it for my business?
Unlike normal search engines, pay per click advertising
allows you to instantly reach a top listing for any key
word or phrase you select.
By using pay per click advertising on the Internet, your
business can find the visitors who are searching for the
very products and services that you offer, reduce your
overall advertising costs, increase your "brand awareness"
and multiply your business.
Where do I go to learn more?
Start by visiting some of the following pay per click search
engines and read and compare their rules and requirements
for getting started.
Look for free tools and online help, cost to get started
and the degree of control you will have over your funds
and your advertising options.
At this time, Overture and Google are generally considered
to be some of the best pay per click advertising services
available on the Internet.

Summary:
To be successful with pay per click advertising, you must
frequently test your ads, analyze your results, and "fine
tune" your overall advertising process.
After you learn the "basics", pay per click advertising can
quickly become the least expensive and the most effective
advertising method of all.

"The Mysterious Windows Registry"
By Ralph Moore
What is the Windows Registry?
The Windows registry is a database that controls the
options and settings in the "32 bit" versions of Microsoft
Windows, which are Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP.
More specifically, it contains information that controls
the settings for hardware, software, users, preferences and
security for the computer.
Why is the registry important?
Much of the way that your computer functions depends upon
the settings in the registry. By making changes to settings
in the Control Panel, in the Administrative settings area
or to installed software, the changes are updated in the
registry.
Where is the registry located?
The location of the registry files varies from one version
of Windows to another.
In Windows 95 and 98 the two hidden files that make up the
registry are called user.dat and system.dat and are located
in the main Windows directory.
Windows ME adds a third file, called classes.dat
In Windows NT and 2000, the files are located in the
%SystemRoot%\System32\Config directory. %SystemRoot% refers
to the "root" location on your hard drive where Windows is
installed, normally C:\WINNT. Windows XP uses a different
system to store the registry files.
What can I do with the registry?
By changing the Windows registry, you can effectively
"tweak" the way that Windows (and any installed program)
behaves.
By knowing how to back up and restore your Windows registry,
you can be assured that you can repair any damage that may
occur to your computer and your working environment.
How do I edit the registry?
[Warning: Before editing the Windows registry, always be sure
you have a current backup of the registry files, and know the
correct way to restore the files if necessary.]
In order to edit the registry, you need to use a tool known
as the "Registry Editor".
When editing the registry, you will notice that the structure
looks similar to the directory structure of your hard drive.
The registry editor, called "regedit.exe" (or "regedt32.exe"
for Windows NT, 2000 and XP) can be run from the command line
by clicking Start / Run, and typing "regedit" in the "Open"
field (type "regedt32" for NT, 2000 or XP).
How can I learn more about the Windows registry?
For an easy guide to getting started with the Windows
registry (no "techie" skills necessary), visit:

Once you begin to understand what the Windows registry is
and how it works, you can begin to gain more control over
your working environment.
By starting with some basic information, and taking it one
step at a time, you can easily "tweak" the Windows registry,
take control of your computer and fine tune your business.

[Ideas to inspire better communication]
The rich man was told that if he ever wanted to see his
son again, to bring a certain diamond to a phone booth in
the center of a very public park. Undercover policemen
watched intently as the scene unfolded.
Arriving at the park, the rich man went to the phone booth
and followed his instructions precisely.
Why were the police unable to keep the diamond from leaving
the park and being delivered to the kidnapper?
