[Observations on business and life]

It is by acts and not by ideas that people live.
--Anatole France

You will be better advised to watch what we do instead
of what we say.
--John N. Mitchell

Listen to what people are saying, but pay closer attention
to what they are doing. Words easily spoken are sometimes
nothing more than good intentions. But actions truly tell
the heart of the matter.

Increase Security in Multi-User Environments

Network operating systems, such as Windows NT/2000/XP,
Unix, Linux and many others offer advanced security
options. At the heart of each system is the ability to
assign and control security at the individual and group
level.

For example, in Windows XP you will normally belong to
either the Administrators or Users group, by default.

Administrators have complete control over the system and
settings, while users are limited to the priveleges
delegated to their group.

If you choose to always "log in" and do all of your work
as an administrator, you are lowering your overall security
to your system and to your network. If, while logged in as
"admin" for example, your system gets hit with a virus or a
"Trojan Horse", it is very possible for the "intruder" to
make system-wide changes and to destroy "your world".

Don't do it! Instead, get in the habit of working from a
user account, and only log in as "admin" when necessary,
such as when adding a new user or changing your security
settings.

This is a simple, established way to quickly increase your
security for your computer systems and for your networks.

"The Heart Of Any Business"
By Ralph Moore (c)2004

Have you ever considered what makes one business wildly
successful while another one is struggling to succeed?

We have all heard that the single most important criteria
for a "bricks and mortar" enterprise is "location, location,
location".

And yet, I have seen businesses with the best locations
and with the most sought-after products "here today" and
"gone with the wind" tomorrow.

I'm sure you have too.

Certainly there is more to any endeavor than the location,
and having exceptional products doesn't necessarily assure
success.

What then, IS at the "heart" of a successful business?

In people, the "heart" has been called the "innermost part
of their being". It's also been called the "soul of man".

The "heart" is what makes you, well... YOU. Your dreams,
desires, passions and beliefs are all things that make
up your heart - that which you REALLY "hold dear".

Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi said:

"The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to
their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen
field of endeavor." --Vince Lombardi

Coach Lombardi understood that if a person was "committed to
excellence", meaning that they "put their whole heart into
their efforts", regardless of the task, then the quality of
their life would rise above the ordinary.

The same holds true for any business. Businesses are run by
people. The extent to which the people running any business
are committed to excellence in every aspect of that
business, will greatly affect the quality, or the measure of
success that business will enjoy.

Is that all, then? If you are committed to excellence in
your business, are you assured of success?

Not necessarily. Of course, we all WISH it were as simple
as that, don't we? After all, what serious business owner
or professional is not "commited" to excellence in every
aspect of his or her business"?

Unfortunately, it takes a bit more than a good location,
excellent products and a "commitment to excellence" to
be successful.

If you're like I am, the "wisdom of the years" just might
be "starting to shine" in the hair on top of your head.
(My wife says the silver in my hair just means I'm getting
older. Ha! What does she know? - I think it's wisdom!)

I mention that because I'm old enough to remember the time
when many business deals were concluded with a handshake.
A man's (or woman's) word was their "bond".

Sadly, times have changed. Now we have to get it in writing
to keep our lawyers and accountants happy.

In biblical times, a man's words were sometimes said to be
"salted", meaning you could trust whatever he said. Whenever
he spoke, you knew that he would always say exactly what he
meant, and that he would mean everything he said.

We call that integrity.

Just like commitment to excellence, integrity can be
found at the heart of any truly successful business.

Whether in dealings with your customers, your suppliers or
even your employees, your integrity, your willingness to
mean what you say and to say what you mean, will greatly
determine the success or failure of your business.

Lord Byron said, "There is no instinct like that of the
heart." and from the Bible we can see...

...For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Matthew 12:34

People are not easily fooled, and they have an amazing
ability to see where you are "coming from". My experience
has shown me that most people would rather work with
someone who will stand behind their promises, rather than
someone who simply offers a "lower price".

Measure for measure, the success of any business will
greatly depend upon the integrity of the people who lead
the business.

By all means, strive to offer the best products, from an
excellent location, using outstanding advertising campaigns
and only after hiring the most wonderful employees.

But most of all, insure that integrity, and a commitment
to excellence, are at the heart of your business and you
will ultimately succeed.

For Valentine's Day, here's a special announcement...

A DAY FOR HEARTS - Help A Heart Kid Live

Hi there...

Just a quick note to let you know about something a good
friend of mine is doing that I hope you'll want to help
with.

Dr.Mani Sivasubramanian, heart surgeon and webmaster of
'Heart Disease Online' has joined an effort to help children
with birth defects of the heart receive medical treatment.

"A Day For Hearts: Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day"
is a global publicity event that focuses attention on the
deadly problem of heart defects in kids. The aim is to
spread awareness about the problem and help sick children
get a chance to live.

http://www.CHDinfo.com/chdaware/

None of the hundreds of people helping with this, including
Dr.Mani, make a cent from it. 100% of the funds raised goes
towards treating *heart kids* And this is done in the most
cost-effective manner, by funding treatment at centers of
excellence where expenses are the least.

Think for a moment about a child you love. Imagine how you'd
feel if that child had a heart condition. Then think about
how bad it would be if this child couldn't have it treated.

Then ask yourself if you would do something to help, to make
sure this won't happen to another child somewhere else. A
child without access to medical attention, or with a family
that's simply too poor to afford the cost of lifesaving
treatment.

Whatever you might have thought, it doesn't take a fortune
to get heart defects treated. Even $2,500 can help a child
have life-saving heart surgery in India.

Now imagine the power you have. If you, and a few hundred
more people like you, help with as little as $5 or $10, we
could easily raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for
*heart kids*. And if you tell five more friends to do
the same, the impact could be greater.

***  You could save a child's life - literally ***

And you don't have to spend money. There are many more
ways you can help. Do whatever you can. Every little bit
adds up - fast. Start today. Go to

http://www.CHDinfo.com/chdaware/

And please, spread the word. Forward this note to anyone
you think might be willing to help out. Tell your friends,
family, customers, contacts - everyone.

Then treat yourself to a smile. You'll have earned it.

*** GIVE - so a child may live! ***
