1) ======= Flight Lines =======
[Observations on business and life]

Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting
difficulties, passing from one step of success to another,
forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.
--Samuel Johnson

If one advances confidently in the directions of his
dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has
imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in
common hours. --Henry David Thoreau

Success is the result of a step-by-step process. If your
goal is to reach the top of the mountain, the surest way
to get there is by moving onward and upward, one step at
a time.

2) ======= Wing Tips =======
[A variety of business helps and tips]

Disable Windows XP Desktop Cleanup Wizard

Windows XP includes a "tool" called Desktop Cleanup Wizard.
It's purpose is to remove unused items from your desktop.

By default, it is set to work every 60 days. If you happen
to like your desktop the way that YOU have it set up, you
can disable this "helper" by doing the following:

Right-click an empty area of the desktop, click Properties,
then the Desktop tab, and finally Customize Desktop.

On the General tab, uncheck the "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard
every 60 days" box.

Now you are back in control of your Desktop. If you ever
need to use the wizard, you can still do so by clicking the
"Clean Desktop now" button.

"We've got trouble, right here in River City!"
By Ralph Moore (c)2003

Ladies and Gentlemen, We have a problem.

Let's just say that there is this "One Great Big Powerful
Company" that is trying to monopolize the "highways" and
the "byways" that you travel on the "net".

Now, to keep this simple for those of you who have told
me time and time again, how computer "un-savvy" you are,
I'll just give you an example of what is happening.

Let's just suppose for the sake of argument that one fine
Sunday afternoon, you and your family decide to take a nice
quiet little drive in the country.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and everything
is just so fine, that you're barely paying attention to
where you are going. Life is grand!

Then all of a sudden as you turn the next corner, there it
is right in front of you... Chicago! Now that might be O.K.
if you didn't happen to live in say, Dallas or maybe Witchita.

Now as shocked as you are, you are NOT about to tell anyone
what just happened to you. So you stop at the nearest
convenience store, and ask for directions back to Dallas.

Back home, you start hearing rumors from some of your
neighbors that they "dreamed" they got lost on a recent trip,
and wouldn't you know it, they all ended up in Chicago.

Doesn't matter where they started out, or where they were
headed; every time anyone got lost, he ended up in Chicago.

Now, don't get me wrong. I LIKE Chicago! In fact, I used to
live there, and I still have some family members there.

But I'm pretty sure that I don't want to end up there every
time I take a wrong turn.

And that is more or less what is happening as a result of
a company called Verisign. Because of their power and sphere
of influence, they have recently started a "service" called
Sitefinder.

Now, every time anyone tries to visit a site that doesn't
exist, there's a pretty good chance that she is going to
end up at Verisign.com (Chicago)!

Simply put, the result of all of this is that not only will
it break technical standards and threaten the security and
stability of the Internet, but this "service" is certain to
affect key services and systems, such as DNS and email.

And in addition to violating the rights of legitimate (paid)
domain holders, unresolved domain name searches that by
default, take the "surfer" to the Verisign web site is a
practice that is anti-competetive to say the least.

The short-term profit goals of one company, should never be
allowed to undermine the stability and coherence of the vital
DNS system employed by all Internet users.

Now anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a "joiner" of
causes. I simply do not have the time or the resources to
devote to most such efforts.

But this is something that I understand, and believe to be
crucial to the continued proper operation of the Internet.

Please take a moment from your busy schedule and join with
me in trying to stop this DNS abuse by Verisign.

[Sites and services that we recommend]

Software Patches for Everything!

What's a software patch? Glad you asked...

A software patch can be an upgrade which adds new features
to an existing program, a "bug" fix to repair a problem,
a new device driver to improve the performance of your older
hardware, or an update for new issues such as security.

Are all of your programs "patched" and up to date? Are you
sure? Well, if there is any doubt as to whether or not you
might need a patch for one of your critical programs, visit
the Software Patch web site for more information.

Real Food From the Bench - Chicken

[Only thing on the bench this week was some real food -
so I thought I would share the recipe - Take time to eat!]

Salsa Chicken Breasts
Serves: 4

4 skinless boneless chicken breast halves
3/4 cup salsa
1/2 cup sliced green onions
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 clove minced garlic or powder
1/8 tsp pepper

Set oven to 350*F.
Stir together the salsa, onions garlic and pepper in a small
bowl. Place the chicken in an ovenproof baking dish, (use
either teflon coated or cooking spray) Spoon salsa over the
chicken. Sprinkle with cheese.

Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake another 10-12
minutes or until chicken is done. (When the internal temp. of
the chicken reaches 185 degrees using a meat thermometer)

Serve with steamed or oil roasted vegetables for a great
low-fat meal. Enjoy!

7) ======= Eye of the Eagle =======
[Ideas to inspire better communication]

Six glasses are sitting in a row. The first three are full
of water. The last three are empty. By moving only one,
how can you end up with alternating empty and full glasses?

(Answer(s) in the next issue of the Flyer)

***
Answer to Last Issue's Puzzler...

[A lily pad plant starts growing in the middle of a pond.
Each night it doubles in size. On day 30, the pond is
covered. How big was the lily pad on day 29?]

Half the size of the pond.
