Service Above and Beyond
By Ralph Moore

I like to eat. Although I have been accused of not being particularly choosy, I am specifically fond of foods with a little spice. Like Thai, Chinese or Mexican.

There is an excellent Mexican restaurant here in Greenwood, where the service and food are the best, and there is seldom a wait of more than a few minutes. As we are paying our bill, there is always a basket of peppermint candies, free for the taking.

Sure, I know this is a small token of gratitude on the part of the owners, but it is, nevertheless significant. We have always been well served by the excellent food and attentive service and really expect nothing more.

And that's precisely why it matters.

You see, they really don't have to do that. This is a VERY popular restaurant. I don't think anyone is actually going there for the mints. But still, they do a little bit more, they go 'above and beyond the call' of what's expected.

And, at least in my case, it makes an impression. Here's another example of service 'above and beyond'.

Way back in 1971, I was a teenager working night-stock for a local grocery store on the eastside of Indianapolis.

On Saturday mornings, I would often stop for breakfast at a nearby restaurant. As I usually sat in the same area, I would be served by Karen, one of the full-time waitresses.

At the time, it never dawned on me just how attentive she was. In January 1972, I enlisted in the Air Force. It wasn't until nearly three years later, while home on leave, that I managed to get back to my old hangout for breakfast.

There was Karen, cheerful as always, working behind the counter. As she brought me a cup of coffee, I heard her ask, "Let's see, two eggs scrambled, sausage patties, hash browns, and a double order of toast, right?"

I was amazed. Sure I almost always ordered the same thing, but I never would have dreamed that anyone would remember that, especially after such a long time.

I started watching Karen, and it became clear to me that her regular customers would often have their favorite beverage at their usual spot, before they even sat down.

What's more, Karen took a genuine interest in the care of her customers, as if they were part of her own family. She was detail-minded in every aspect of her job.

Needless to say, Karen always seemed to have the largest tips of any of the waitresses. All because she made the extra effort to take care of her customers, by doing the unexpected, by offering service 'beyond the call' of what most people would expect.

As business owners and professionals your challenge is to find new ways of setting yourselves apart from the competition.

When you do a little bit more than what is expected, when you excel, by offering service 'beyond the call' of your duties to your customers, then you will begin to make a lasting impression, and a loyal customer for your business.
