"Seasons of Our Lives"
By Ralph Moore (c)2003

This time of year always puts me in a reflective mood.

I find my thoughts turning to past friends, family and
relationships and wondering at some of the subtle changes
that seem to occur almost without notice.

Someone suddenly has a new granddaughter or is now a
little bit more noticably grey upstairs, if they still
have anything up there at all!

The "seasons of our lives" are like the slow rythmic
pulse of the ocean, constantly moving forward, then
receding into the distance.

It seems at times that we are only standing on the shore,
silent observers to that which we are in awe of, but
powerless to do anything about.

Or are we?

As this beautiful autumn season unfolds around us, we make
slight adjustments, like adding a sweater for our evening
walk or possibly "firing up" the wood stove for a bit of
extra warmth at night.

It has always interested me to know that as the days grow
shorter and the leaves fall from the trees, autumn is a
part of a larger cycle of life, rest and renewal.

Leaves protect food for animals throughout the winter
months, and become mulch and fertilizer for the seeds and
young plants of spring.

Pine trees drop their cones, providing a means of renewal
and regeneration in the continuing cycle of life.

And so the cycle continues.

This is also a time when I choose to take note of my own
personal "seasons" and make adjustments in preparation for
the inevitable changes ahead.

Building on past successes, both personal and professional
allows me to forge ahead, perhaps a bit less careless and
hopefully more mindful of what works and what never will.

Older now, I realize that there are spiritual laws that
affect every aspect of life, just as physical laws like
gravity and time permeate every area of our lives.

Offer kindness, encouragement and praise to others and
watch as they strive to live up to your level of esteem.

Render a disparaging word in a thoughtless moment, and
the damage may be long-lasting and bring less than desired
results.

We are all a part of the great cycles and seasons of the
life that is all around us. The choices that we make, good
or bad, have an effect on every thing and everyone that
we come in contact with.

During this season of your life take time to remember the
past year and plan ahead for the years to come.

The "change that we choose to be" is within our control,
when we recognize the power we have to make right decisions
based on the wisdom of our past choices.

Offer words of encouragement and kindness to everyone in
your circle of life, both personal and professional, and
watch as you effect positive change around you.

Let us all plant seeds and watch them grow throughout the
seasons of our lives.
