"Moving On"
By Ralph Moore (c)2003

Time and tide wait for no man... --Robert Frost

Like it or not, there are times in life when we have to
make a change. And one of the biggest changes that you may
ever have to face, is that of moving your family, your home
and all of your "stuff" to a new location.

People move for a whole host of reasons. A growing family,
a different job in a new city, financial changes, changes
in health or even a death in the family are all valid
reasons for needing to move to a new location.

Some times you can't "see it coming". Often times you can.

Realizing that change is inevitable can solve half of your
problems if you are able to plan for your eventual move.

And even if circumstances prevent you from seeing your
future as clearly as if you had a "crystal ball", simply
making a few changes to the way that you do things can
reduce the overall impact of having to "move on".

After 19 years in the same house, we are currently in the
final stages of moving to a new location. It has been a
learning process to say the least.

Take it from me... Plan ahead! Remember, it wasn't raining
when Noah built the Ark.

By taking time to keep your possessions loosely organized,
you can save time and reduce the overall stress of a move,
when it's finally time to pack up and go.

For example, keeping your tools organized with "a place for
everything, and everything in it's place", will not only
make your work efforts more productive, but will insure
that your eventual move will require less preparation.

And the same goes for moving your business and all of the
equipment, records and tools that help you do whatever it
is that you do best in your business or profession.

When planning for a vacation, it's helpful to use a check-
list to make sure you're not forgetting anything. The same
goes for whenever you're making a permanent move.

And if you are moving far away, all the more need to "get
it right" the first time, since you may not be coming back.

Keep your expectations in line with reality. Realize that
wherever you are going, things are bound to be at least
a little bit different.

Since we were only moving a few miles away, much will
remain the same. But we still had to find the number for
the all-important pizza shop!

Make sure that you keep the lines of communication open.
You may need to contact friends, neighbors and businesses
at your old location while you are moving, as well as at
your destination.

Cell phones are one of the best tools available today, and
every member of your family or "team" should have one on
hand to get things done efficiently.

It helps to make a list of priorities when undertaking a
major move. Those things that seem most important at the
start of a move, may change due to the move itself.

In our case, we found that our SBC DSL service is not yet
available in our new area. Fortunately, I found what may
end up being the best replacement available today.
(See the "From the Bench" section for more information.)

Take the best... leave the rest. Sometimes, you may need
to leave things behind when you move. What better time
to discard excess "baggage" than when making a major move?

If you can't use it, sell it or donate it to charity.
(Be sure to get a receipt for tax purposes.)

Gone are the days when most of us were born, lived and
spent our final days under the same roof. While many
people spend year after year in the same place, more than
likely, a move is somewhere in your future.

By taking time to plan ahead, you will reduce the effort
required, improve your results and reach your goals when
it finally comes to "Moving On"!
