"Moving Your Web Site to a New Hosting Provider"
By Ralph Moore (c)2004

If you are a business owner or professional, chances are
you already have a web site and email addresses that are
an important part of your business.

At some point, it may be necessary to move your web site
to a different hosting provider.

How do you go about moving your entire web site and email
addresses, without losing any of your web site features,
and most importantly, your web site traffic and contact
with your customers?

Here are the steps you will need to take to make the move,
and to "keep your cool" in the process!

1. "Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark!"
The best time to plan a move is before you need to make one.

2. Choose a new web hosting provider. If you are not sure of
your needs, talk to someone who can help you sort it out.
My personal recommendation and the web hosting provider that
I use for all of my web sites can be found here:
http://www.eagleflyer.com/a/h4p.html

One of the reasons that I recommend this provider is that
you can actually move your web site and email addresses,
while maintaining your current site, and thereby reduce your
downtime.

3. Contact all of your customers and suppliers and let them
know of your intended move, an approximate date and time and
provide an alternate method of contact, such as fax or phone.

4. Make absolutely sure that you have an up to date copy of
your web site on your own hard drive. This may include some
scripts or services that operate from separate directories
on the web server, or from third-party servers on another
part of the Internet.

5. Visit your domain name "registrar" (where you registered
your domain name) and change the "DNS" (Domain Name Server)
info to match your new web site hosting provider's info.

In about 24-48 hours, your web site will be active at your
new location. You may experience some intermittent downtime
from some areas of the Internet, while your DNS records are
being updated and propagated throughout the world-wide DNS
servers.

You can check the DNS information to see when it has been
updated, by visiting http://www.whois.net or by using the
"whois" link at http://www.internic.com

6. Upload your files to your new provider's server. Check
to make sure that everything is working properly. After
you are sure that your site is up and running, you can
cancel your previous service provider account.

By planning ahead and following a step-by-step process,
you can "make your move", limit your downtime and maximize
your success.
